Pli - The Warwick Journal of Philosophy is looking for translators for an upcoming special issue. The issue will feature papers that were given at the recent workshop in Venice, 'Between Deleuze and Simondon', organised by the European Network in Contemporary French Philosophy.
**As many of the papers were delivered in French, translations into English are required for their publication in Pli**. [...].
Although we are **unable to offer payment for translations**, this is a **valuable opportunity to have published your translations** of the work of notable Deleuze scholars in a journal with a strong reputation in Deleuze studies".

Uma grande senhora da tradução
Que nos influenciou a todos...
No passado dia 6 de Novembro de 2009, pelas 14 horas, o Instituto de Letras e Ciências Humanas da Universidade do Minho teve a honra de receber a Professora Christiane Nord, da Universidade de Magdeburg, e um dos nomes mais sonantes da chamada Teoria Funcionalista, que proferiu uma conferência intitulada "Translating as a Purposeful Activity: Skopostheorie explained”.

Translating as a Purposeful Activity: Skopostheorie explained
The lecture focuses on the theoretical foundations and practical and/or pedagogical implications of a "function-oriented" approach to translation. In this context, the following questions will be discussed: What is communicative action, what is a text, what is translation? How do we define a culture? How does communicative action work within a culture and across cultural boundaries? How can we identify the communicative functions of a text? Which conditions must be met to assure that the communicative functions intentions of a source-culture author will effectively function for receivers in another culture? What can be done if these conditions are not met? Do theoretical approaches really lead to better translations?

Smart spectacles aid translation
Spectacles that can provide subtitles have been created by hi-tech firm NEC.
Resembling glasses but lacking lenses, the headset uses a tiny projector to display images on a user's retina.
NEC said it planned a version that used real-time translation to provide subtitles for a conversation between people lacking a common language.
The firm said the gadget, dubbed Tele Scouter, was intended for sales people or employees dealing with inquiries from customers.
NEC said the Tele Scouter was intended to be a business tool that could aid sales staff who would have information about a client's buying history beamed into their eye during a conversation.
But, it said, it could also be put to a more exotic use as a translation aid. In this scenario the microphone on the headset picks up the voices of both people in a conversation, pipes it through translation software and voice-to-text systems and then sends the translation back to the headset.
At the same time as a user hears a translation, they would also get text subtitles beamed onto the retina.
"You can keep the conversation flowing," NEC spokesman Takayuki Omino told AFP at a Tokyo trade show where the device was unveiled.
Mr Omino said the system could also be used for confidential talks that would be compromised by the use of a human translator.
NEC said the Tele Scouter would be launched in Japan in November, 2010 but would initially lack the translation feature. A version that can provide subtitles would follow in 2011, it said.
When it goes on sale, a batch of 30 headsets will cost about 7.5m yen (£50,000). The cost does not include the price of the translation tools and software.

Até sempre, António!
Hoje estou triste... profundamente triste.
Acabo de ler esta notícia e ainda estou a tentar digerir a mesma.
Não há palavras para descrever o efeito que António Sérgio produziu na minha geração.
Se hoje sou o que sou, devo-o a gente como ele... "Ele", sobretudo, "a voz" que educou o nosso gosto musical, que nos apresentou tantas e tantas bandas alternativas no seu "Som da Frente", programa que diariamente nos acompanhava e mobilizava, e que tantas legiões de fiéis seguidores conquistou.
Os seus programas radiofónicos eram quase uma religião, um momento de culto que dificilmente esqueceremos. O "John Peel português", como diziam. Tantos nomes, tantas memórias, tanta saudade.
Não tenho palavras para lhe agradecer o quanto contribuiu para a minha formação como melómano. A música não será como dantes. Nem a rádio. Resta-me a consolação de que estarás, algures, num estúdio qualquer, curtindo o teu som, devorando "the next big thing", e ditando a moda, juntamente com o teu mentor, John Peel, que também nos abandonou. Definitivamente, o mundo da música está hoje pobre. Bem mais pobre.
Bem-hajas, António e um abraço, onde quer que estejas.

Crowdsourcing translations: Uma questão de borlas

A Google não paga as suas traduções, o ProZ também não.
Agora foi a vez do LinkedIn.
A Common Sense Advisory defende a iniciativa.
"The take-away for freelancers is clear: CT3 is not a threat to the profession. It is simply another method of working in the digital age. Just like computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools were once seen as a threat by freelancers who had no familiarity with them, CT3 looks and sounds menacing at first to those who have not engaged it in before. In reality, the practice generates more work for freelancers -- not just for translation of traditional projects, but post-editing and proofreading of CT3 content -- because it opens up new multilingual markets that companies might not otherwise enter." Ora vejam só: CT3 — community, crowdsourced, and collaborative translation" Lindo, não é? Mas vende, é o que interessa. Areia para os olhos dos incautos. E lá vamos andando todos embrulhados nessa imensa nebulosa do "crowdsourcing".

Há muito que queria falar disto aqui.
Tratou-se de um dos espectáculos mais intensos que vi recentemente, numa tradução soberba e irrepreensível do Paulo Eduardo Carvalho (esse mago da palavra, alquimista trabalhando no limiar da metamorfose, que parece captar como ninguém a riqueza da dramaturgia irlandesa).
E, no entanto, modesto e humilde como sempre, quando, no final, lhe deram os parabéns pela fantástica tradução, respondendo apenas com um sincero, e nada afectado, "quando o texto é bom, quando o que está por detrás do nosso trabalho tem uma dimensão assim tão grande, o nosso trabalho fica facilitado e saímos de cena". [minha tradução]
Como se nem se notasse, portanto.
Pois é, Paulo, o problema é que se nota, e muito. E é por isso que se nota o teu dedo na construção do texto, suportando a força e a intensidade dramáticas dos actores. E é isso que dá força e magia ao teu trabalho. E é isso que te torna ainda mais visível, nesta obscuridade com que, às vezes, nos olham.
